My Favorite Disc 1 – Pitching Wedge McLink & The Beat-to-Hell Roc

By | June 7, 2013

About a year ago, I had no clue what anything I’m about to write meant.  My drankin’ buddies suggested I come out and try “disc golf”, and I figured it couldn’t hurt.  Instant addiction and hundreds of rounds later, I have opinions and preferences.  Whodathunkit?!

Onwards to my favorite disc: The Beat-to-Hell Roc.

The clarifying statement of “beat-to-hell” is key here since I chuck around other assorted Rocs that I wouldn’t consider my favorites.  This particular beautiful disaster is a 176g off white, gold stamp, 12x KC-Pro Roc.  With the amount of plastic ripped from the rim after constant tree murdering attempts, I have no idea what it weighs now but probably something considerably less than 176g.

The reason I’m such a fan of this particular Roc is the ease with which I can turn it over, even at slow speeds.  When I first started playing, the only option I had to move a disc right (I’m a RHBH thrower) was a flick.  Now, after learning what I hope is better form, I can stand on a tee pad with my trusty 12x and know, without a doubt, than it’ll finish on an anhyzer line.  Even when I need to add power, I try and release it flat or slightly hyzer and watch a silky smooth hyzer flip stand up and run right.  When less power is needed, the beat-to-hell Roc will hold a straight line for nearly the entire flight when released flat.  Mine will never finish left, unless I throw it like a complete a$$, which gives me total confidence when a straight or anny line is required.  The only complaint I ever had with this disc was difficulty in grip.  With such a thin rim, I had early challenges with release.  I now stuff my pinkie against the rim and slightly fan out my other fingers which has made the release loads easier.  This was likely my issue because I sucked, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
